(un) limited Internet

You who are reading this are probably enjoying reading this with something that is called, Unlimited Internet. It means you can use your internet unlimitingly. I think that is nice. They haven't quite discovered that here in Africa and so we are limited, very limited. We get .5 gigs during the day and 2.5 gigs at night. A few downloads and some emails and a youtube upload and we are done for. We used quite a few during the middle of the month and so we have been paying the price, literally and figuratively, at the end of the month. Literally we have been paying the price because you CAN top up by getting some more space, but it cost around $12.50 for 100 megs. So, that adds up quickly. Figuratively we are paying the price, because you can't do blogs or anything like without going to an internet cafe.

Now, don't take this for whining or complaining, because I am very grateful to have internet at my home. I say all this so you know the reason I haven't blogged much recently. BUT, tomorrow is a NEW MONTH!!!! So, be a-watchin' the blog because I got some good stuff to share!

See ya tomorrow.

A wake up call

Well, unfortunately I have some tough news. But first, everyone is okay. While I was in Southern Zambia, our house was robbed last night and Daka, our guard, (whom I had asked to work nights while I was gone) was beaten by the thieves. It turns out he has either a dislocated shoulder after a visit to an orthopedic doctor.

We don’t know how they got into our yard, but Daka saw them (4 guys), as they were trying to get into the kitchen window which doesn’t have security bars on it. (Our interior house is secure with bars – Just the outside is not). After Daka saw them and they beat him they gave up on that and broke the glass on the office window and grabbed Michelle's computer (our intern who I will write a post about soon),through the hole in the security bars (I had my computer with me. Stephanie was using her computer while she was at the conference with our CROSS team) which was sitting on the desk. That’s all they got. Daka pursued them and they beat him again, knocking him unconscious maybe for the second time.

As you can imagine, getting the call this morning at 7:15 am in Sinazongwe, a good six hours from home, I was pretty distraught. God was gracious as I was able to get a ride to a bus station and then caught a bus, perhaps 3 minutes after I got there. I got home by 3:30pm. We replaced the glass and we are getting back to normal at our house. It was a bit scary as you can imagine, and I think we are all feeling a bit shaken by this. In so many ways, we sense God gracious hand on this event. And the loyalty of our guard astounds us. We just got off the phone with Daka and he is doing better. He is appreciating the powerful drugs
. We will take care of him in every way necessary since he won’t be able to work. We are thinking through how to shore up security, including hiring a night guard with a security firm.

We appreciate your prayers, for all of us, for wisdom on how to proceed, for confidence and faith and fearlessness. We thank you for walking with us through all these ordeals… (and oh, by the way, the conference was going great when I left. I heard tonight that it went well today as well. Please pray for their final day and their journey home.)

Thanks for your prayers,

Go, Send or Disobey

We were talking to some friends yesterday about how easy it is to forget about the world and missions and the needs that exist in the world, even being a missionary. You get caught up in the daily grind of living and forget their is a whole world that exists outside your little world. I wanted to include this video to remind us to pray, go and/or to send so that we do not disobey.

The latest in our world

I am preaching tomorrow at International Baptist Church, the church that we attend as a family. I am preaching on the Holy Spirit (That should be an easy to wrap up in one message:)). It has been a pretty full week catching up on all the post-conference details of life that we have swept under the rug. Next Thursday, we leave for Komena, a small village about six hours away to do a pastor's conference using our CROSS HIV/AIDS material. It is right on a beautiful lake, but don't envy to quickly. They say you can't swim because of some small risks such as crocodiles and hippos. I guess I'll resort to staying cool with a fan.

The Intern's turn

Today, it was Owen's turn. We went to one of the pastor's church from our Bible College and Owen was the preacher. It was his first time ever, preaching, and wow, was I blown away. He showed such poise, a gentle yet convicting presence, and demonstrated such power in his stories and his understanding of the word. When I was first proposing that he come and intern for the summer, I wrote down on the proposal, he wants to be a doctor or a pastor. Well, the pastor part I kind of put there on my own, but, I told him today, you better rethink your future because you have a gift. So, we'll see. His time is running out here, as he leaves on Thursday. He has been a huge blessing to our ministry these past couple months and he will be missed. He promised me he would pray. Maybe you could just join him as well. His last job here is to put together a final summary of his time here in Zambia. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to post that here later this week.

And one fun picture, a few nights ago, we decided to play not one game, but two...
Stratego and Scrabble. The winner? Well, Owen preached today on humility and I sufficiently helped him make sure he knew firsthand what he was going to preach:)

Pastor Conference Recap

We finished up our "Building Biblical Marriages" conference today. As far as my participation, I spoke twice, Wednesday and Thursday. My message was too long for one day, so I made it a two part series! The title was "How being Satisifed in your Spouse glorifies God!" Anyone who reads John Piper will instantly recognize that I "borrowed" from his wording and even more his teaching of the Word of God. His most "famous" phrase is: God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. The more I think about it, the more true that statement becomes, especially when it is applied in a marriage relationship.

Anyway, it was a great time to be challenged by some great speakers from both America and from Zambia. In addition, it was great to reconnect with pastors that are not in our programs. And, the worship can't be beat. This conference I had one of the pastors help me translate all the Bemba songs so I could not only know what they are singing but also what the words meant.

A couple of cool things happened: On the first day, a pastor from a conference I did last year came up to me as I greeted him and said, "Tenga, Chita, Onassessa, Manga! See I remember!!!" These are the Nyanga words for the words we use for inductive study. Another pastor was very encouraging as he introduced before I spoke by saying that my teachings on inductive study and expository preaching have been very impactful and people still talk about those conferences. I share that mostly because I want you who pray and support us to be encouraged that God is encouraging pastors here through our ministry and you are a big part of it. I was encouraged and I want you to be as well. Our labor is not in vain. Thank you for all your support and prayers!!!

I included a short highlight video to let you see what what went on during the conference. I would encourage you to watch it if for no other reason than to see my wife singing with the other Action ladies...

More missionaries to Zambia?!?!?

I just wanted to share a newsletter from a family who have their sights on Zambia. You can say you heard it here first. Please be praying for them!

Dear Family and Friends,
Many of you know that since Derek and I met in Zambia and got married, we have sensed God leading us to become long-term missionaries back in Zambia with Action International Ministries. Through a series of providential events, we got in contact with
the current ACTION Zambia director, Tim Hilty, who has asked us to come back long-term to coordinate and lead the CROSS (Churches Ready to Overcome Silence and Stigma) project.
Currently, CROSS works with churches to turn the tide of silence and stigma surrounding the pervasive issueof HIV/AIDS. Our vision is to also address the silence and stigma around broken/destructive marriages and battered women. All of those issues are rampant in the Zambian culture and church, and many Zambians do not see anything wrong.

Derek and I are excited about returning to Zambia to work in
this capacity. However, before we return long-term, we need to
be approved in person by several entities: our sending church –
Bethlehem Baptist in Minneapolis; the mission agency – Action
International Ministries; and the ACTION Zambia Board of
Directors, which is most immediate at this point. Going to
Zambia and being approved by the Board of Directors allows
them and the team to decide if we would be a good fit.
Personally, we also hope that this trip would further confirm
God’s calling and, therefore, help us to stay in Zambia for the
long haul. We will be sending out an update letter soon, but we wanted to specifically ask you in this letter to support us in any of the following areas:
• Pray that God would continue to guide us and give us wisdom and discernment regarding each of these big decisions.
• Pray that God would provide a nursing job for me, so that I can get helpful experience for the
future and income for the present. Though jobs are scarce and I’ve sent out 75-100 applications
with no takers, God is abundantly able to provide exactly what I need.
• Financially support us to take this vision/confirmation trip to Zambia in mid-August for 7-10
days, before Derek starts Fall semester. We hope to both go but realize that Derek may have to go by himself if we cannot afford $3,000 in plane tickets.*
We look expectantly to God, who provides all our needs, to meet us at every step along the way. This path that God is leading us down is filled with joys and hardships, so we strongly desire to be buoyed through your prayers and help for the sake of Jesus Christ in Zambia.
That Zambians would love Jesus more,
Derek and Kristin Dearth
*If you would like to tax-deductibley contribute to our plane tickets, please write a check to Action
International Ministries with “Dearth #43010” in the Memo line and mail it to PO Box 398, Mountlake
Terrace, WA 98043-0398 by August 5th. Thank you!
